Live food for goldfish

Goldfish and daphnia are the oldest pairing in the hobby — Victorian goldfish keepers cultured “water fleas” in horse troughs for exactly the reasons modern keepers do: nothing keeps a goldfish’s digestion moving like daphnia, and nothing grows goldfish fry like a tub of it. Our moina is the warm-water cousin that breeds fast enough in South Africa to keep up.

The feeding plan

StageFeed thisWhy it works
Adults, 2–3 times a weekLive daphnia (moina), generous feedsThe gentle-laxative effect of daphnia shell is the classic answer to goldfish constipation and buoyancy trouble; fish hunt it eagerly at any size
Conditioning for breedingDaphnia most days for 2–3 weeksPairs in live-fed condition spawn more heavily and the eggs are stronger; chase behaviour tells you it is working
Fry, week 1–2Newborn moina from a mixed-age cultureGoldfish fry graduate to hunting tiny crustaceans within days; a culture always has the right size present
Fry & juveniles, grow-outAdult moina, fed heavilyThis is where fancy varieties build body depth; live food plus clean water beats any growth pellet routine

Practical tips

  • Feed daphnia in the morning and let the fish hunt it down through the day — uneaten daphnia stays alive and filtering the water rather than rotting in it.
  • A daphnia tub next to the goldfish pond or tank is the traditional setup for a reason: harvest with a net, feed, repeat.
  • For constipated fish, fast a day, then feed daphnia — and review the dry diet that caused it.
Watch out: Never feed pond-collected daphnia to goldfish: it can carry fish lice and parasites into a system that is expensive to treat. Cultured, rinsed daphnia is the same food without the risk.

Common questions

Is daphnia good for goldfish?

It is arguably the best single live food for them: eagerly hunted, highly digestible, and the shell acts as roughage that keeps the goldfish gut — and fancy varieties’ swim bladders — out of trouble.

What do goldfish fry eat?

After the yolk-sac days, newborn daphnia (moina) from a mixed-age culture, graduating to adult moina within the first weeks. Fry grown on live daphnia develop body and colour far ahead of fry on powder alone.
