Live food for bumblebee gobies

A bumblebee goby does not so much feed as hold a tiny territory and mug whatever wanders past. That is why they starve in tanks full of flakes: food that does not move is not recognised, and food at the surface might as well be on the moon. Live food delivered to the bottom, in front of a perched goby, is the whole secret to keeping these fish round.

The feeding plan

StageFeed thisWhy it works
Daily stapleLive daphnia (moina), pipetted near the bottomMoina sinks and swims low as it tires, crossing a perched goby’s strike zone; movement triggers the pounce that dry food never does
Conditioning & weight gainGrindal worms, small portionsThe richest of their cultured foods — the quickest way to put condition back on a thin, newly imported goby
Small or young gobiesMicrowormsFor fish too small for adult moina; wipe, suspend and pipette them down to where the fish sits
Thin new arrivalsSmall live feeds 2× daily, target-fedNew gobies are often half-starved from shipping; frequent food delivered to the individual fish rebuilds them faster than tank-wide feeding

Practical tips

  • Target-feed: use a pipette to place food in front of each goby’s perch. Broadcast feeding mostly feeds the filter and faster tankmates.
  • Keep them with peaceful, slow tankmates or alone — gobies lose every race to tetras, danios and barbs.
  • Confirm your water: many bumblebee gobies are brackish species (Brachygobius doriae and relatives do best with some salt), while a few are sold for freshwater. The fish feeds the same either way, but it thrives or fades on the water.
Watch out: A goby that has not eaten in the shop will not “settle in and start on flakes” at home. Buy fish you have seen feeding, and have live daphnia or microworms running before they arrive.

Common questions

What do bumblebee gobies eat?

Small live food, hunted from a perch: daphnia (moina) as the staple, grindal worms for condition, microworms for small fish. Most individuals never accept dry food reliably.

Why is my bumblebee goby not eating?

Almost always one of three things: the food does not move, the food never reaches the bottom where the fish sits, or faster tankmates take it first. Target-feed live daphnia with a pipette, right in front of the fish.

Are bumblebee gobies freshwater or brackish?

It depends on the species — several common ones are brackish and fade slowly in soft freshwater. Check which Brachygobius you bought and match the water; their live-food needs are identical either way.
